On May 5, 1961, an episode aired where Beaver climbs up to check a giant cup on a billboard and accidentally falls in. This episode cost $40,000 to produce, making it the most expensive of the series. It was also a memorable one for Mathers as he had to overcome his fear of heights.

Leave It to Beaver was groundbreaking in showing aspects of family life. In one episode, Wally carrying a toilet seat was significant as it was among the earliest times a bathroom element was shown on television. In the 1950s, networks were reluctant to display bathrooms at all.
