The Swiss Supreme Court Responds as It Draws Criticism for Fining a Millionaire $100,000 for Tailgating

A Swiss man has been ordered to pay over $100,000 for tailgating while driving on the highway. This has sparked debate as people question whether it’s fair to charge a millionaire such a large amount for a minor driving offense that would typically cost a US citizen between $100 and $300 depending on prior offenses.

The incident took place in March last year on the A1 highway running from Zurich to Lausanne through Aargau. The motorist was tailgating another car and was caught by the police. When the courts determined the fine, they imposed 50 days’ worth of fines at $2,190 per day, totaling $109,500. Although this fine has been suspended for two years, meaning he’ll have to pay if he reoffends.
