Bates also took the moment to shout out the firefighters who fought the Los Angeles wildfires that started on Jan. 7 and were in the audience. She mentioned that their producer, Eric Christian Olsen, had his house in Palisades burn down, making it a very personal matter. She got choked up while expressing her gratitude for their efforts and revealed a sweet gift for Olsen, saying it was for him to use for decor.
Bates is the leading lady in “Matlock”, playing the titular Madeline Matlock. The show’s first season aired in the second half of 2024. She had previously considered semi-retirement due to the limited roles offered to women her age but then found new hope in the industry with this show.
This is Bates’ third Critics’ Choice nomination, and she won once before in 1999 for her role in the film “Primary Colors”.
