One of the world’s most notorious sex offenders, Josef Fritzl, may soon be released from prison. His lawyer, Astrid Wagner, told the Mirror that given his condition, she believes he’ll be out by next year.
Josef Fritzl, now 89 years old, is an Austrian criminal who made headlines in 2008. He had imprisoned his daughter, Elisabeth, in a basement for 24 years, starting when she was 18 after she disappeared in 1984. During that time, he repeatedly sexually abused her and fathered seven children with her. The case came to light in 2008 when one of the children needed medical care.
In 2009, Fritzl was sentenced to life in prison for rape, incest, false imprisonment, and murder by neglect of one of the infants. However, his lawyer plans to submit a parole application for him in March. She’s confident about his release, citing his advanced age and declining health as reasons why he no longer poses a threat to society. She told the Daily Mail in January that as he’s getting older and frailer, it’s time for him to be released.
