Dog loses hope, “cries endlessly” after 260 days in the shelter — looking for a perfect new home

Long stays in shelters can weigh heavily on a dog’s spirit. Many once-happy dogs grow despondent after months of being overlooked, and that’s exactly what has happened to Major, a shelter dog in Indiana.

Major, a 4-year-old terrier/pit bull mix, has been at the Humane Society for Hamilton County for over 260 days. He “cries endlessly” after being rejected by his previous family, but shelter staff remain hopeful that the perfect home is out there for him.

Major’s story began last summer when he was brought in as a stray. Thanks to his microchip, the shelter reached out to his original owners, who promised to reclaim him. Heartbreakingly, they never showed up.

At first, Major kept his spirits high. The staff described him as “sweet and sensitive,” a loyal companion with a playful side and a love for his favorite toy, the Jolly Ball. They nicknamed him “Major Hunk” and “Major Heartthrob,” celebrating his handsome looks and big heart.

Despite his endearing personality, months passed, and adopters continually overlooked him. The repeated rejection began to take its toll, and Major’s once-bright demeanor started to fade.

“His spunky personality is dimming,” the shelter wrote on Facebook. “This once jolly, ball-loving boy now sits in his room and cries endlessly.”

To ease his stress, the staff moved Major from the kennels to a visiting room, but they know the only real solution is finding him a forever home. Major would thrive in a home without young children or cats. He can coexist with other dogs, though a meet-and-greet is recommended to ensure compatibility.

While not every home is the right fit, there must be a family out there who can give Major the love and care he deserves. His adoption page describes him as a “loving, strong, and playful friend” waiting to brighten someone’s life.

If you’re interested in meeting Major and live near the Humane Society of Hamilton County, you can fill out an application and schedule a visit. Major is ready to find his happy ending—could it be with you?
