President-elect Donald Trump, who will be inaugurated into his second term on Monday, Jan. 20, has said he will likely consider a 60- to 90-day extension for the app until he can potentially facilitate a sale to a domestic company.
Moreover, this isn’t the first time social media use has been questioned recently. In June 2024, U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy officially stated in an opinion piece published in The New York Times that social media may be a contributing factor to mental health issues among young people. He also called for warning labels to be placed on social media, similar to those on alcohol and cigarettes, saying, “It is time to require a surgeon general’s warning label on social media platforms, stating that social media is associated with significant mental health harms for adolescents. A surgeon general’s warning label, which requires congressional action, would regularly remind parents and adolescents that social media has not been proved safe.”
