Nancy’s eyes darted around. There was no sign of Amanda. “How did this baby even get here?” she murmured to herself, her confusion mounting.
The cold wind whipped around her, and without a second thought, Nancy shrugged off her jacket and gently wrapped it around the shivering baby.
But then, as she did so, her hand froze mid-air when she spotted a birthmark on the baby’s neck. “It can’t be,” she whispered, her voice barely audible.
The birthmark was an exact replica of Patrick’s. Nancy’s world was crumbling around her. She didn’t want to believe that her late husband had been unfaithful, but now, she needed to know the truth. She had to find out if Patrick had truly betrayed her.
With the baby still in her arms, Nancy drove home in a daze. She retrieved some strands of Patrick’s hair from his hairbrush and then headed straight to the hospital.
“Hello, I’d like to have a paternity test done,” she told the receptionist at the counter, her voice determined.
“OK, ma’am. Normally, it takes a few days to get the results,” the woman replied.
“Can it be done quicker? I’ll pay extra,” Nancy pleaded.
