The parents of three-year-old Ryleigh Hillcoat-Bee are devastated after learning that their daughter’s life could have been saved. Ryleigh died from complications of rhabdomyolysis, a rare condition that breaks down muscle tissue, affecting one in 200,000 people in the UK.
Coroner Alan Wilson determined that doctors failed to recognize warning signs before discharging Ryleigh from the hospital after a five-day stay. Her condition, which included abnormal blood tests showing extremely high levels of Creatine Kinase, should have raised concern for a neuromuscular issue. Despite these red flags, doctors misdiagnosed her with a chest infection or hepatitis.
